{January 22, 2012}   A Controversial Thought

Controversial:
Watching Law and Order: SVU this morning. Just saw an episode about a couple with 2 kids, both of whom were taken care of by a full time nanny because both parents were consumed by their careers. One child ran in front of a car, the other harmed herself frequently for attention due to lack of her parents in her life. I am, of course, aware that this is a TV show, but I’ve heard and read so many true stories like that. It’s heart breaking! I personally feel that if one parent or the other doesn’t have to work, or at least not full time, it’s awfully irresponsible and self-consumed to stick your kids with a nanny just so you can have your career. Careers will wait. Kids can’t.

So glad that Stephan and I agree on this point. We recently had a long talk about it, and both feel that a mother should be a mother, not a career woman who tosses her kids the scraps of her time.

Not to say that women can’t work. Even women with kids. I look forward to working as an herbalist/Reiki practitioner, but once there are kids involved, we have agreed that I will work from home, and/or part time. Once the kids are in school, work can take more of my time, but I still want to be home when my little people get off the bus.

These are my feelings, and my opinions. Well, mine and my husbands. You can do whatever you want, think whatever you want. Can’t promise that I will agree with you, but you’re entitled to your beliefs and priorities.

So glad to hear a young woman say these things, with obvious love and commitment. I am sure there are millions who see it as you do, but aren’t speaking out.

Having seen a little bit of life, and the results of the above alternatives, I see that full-time motherhood is THE most important and valuable job on the planet. Bar none.

I have to say that in my own opinion (which is based on observation), being a stay-at-home mom is one of life’s highest callings! I know my brothers and I are better off from the years my own mom stayed out of the work force, and for all the scarifies she made to raise us! In addition, a stay-at-home mom can bring financial benefit to the household, in addition to all the other benefits!
