So I’m from North Carolina. Born and raised, 19 years. I’ve spent the last 4 years up in Connecticut, and I think I’ve finally figured out the rules of the road!
- When the speed limit says 50 mph, it really means 60-80 mph
- When your lane is ending, despite what the signs may say, there is no need to merge, just keep driving. The people in the non-ending lane will surely let you in. If not, just keep driving anyhow.
- If someone is turning left, pass them on the shoulder. If they are turning right and just taking too long, pass in the center.
- If someone cuts you off, or is going too slowly, make angry gestures. A lot of them.
- “No Right Turn On Red” is really more of a … suggestion
- Be aggressive! You own the road.
- In the great city of Hartford, red lights don’t mean a thing. Just keep on going. If someone stops at a red light, or gets in your way because their light is green, see “Angry Gestures” .
- But whatever you do, DON’T TALK ON YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING! That would be dangerous
Ok, so while these are all things I see on a regular basis, and they are very strange to this little Southerner, I have to say… Connecticut, these past 4 years have been a real pleasure. I am looking forward to our remaining 6- 8 months here.
